Enter Ruby. Without Rails, Ruby is still a fantastically useful scripting language. In about thirty minutes, I was able to write a script that grabbed the DOH page, parsed it with a handy rubygem called hpricot, checked to see if the status has changed, and if not, it goes to sleep for 5 minutes. When the the status does change, the script will launch FireFox and browse to the page. Maybe I’ll make it send me an email or a text-message too. Right now it’s a whopping seven lines of code.

Appleway. It used to be a rough old re-upholstery shop, but they did a complete remodel and turned it into a charming English-style cafe. The food was very good, and the service was quick and attentive.They serve breakfast and lunch only, and I would say the average plate runs about $9.00 a person.

It’s supposed to be viciously hot this weekend for Hoopfest, so we are trying our best to stay out of the downtown area. We might catch a movie or something later to cool off. We did a little yard work this morning while it was cool (including repairing more sprinklers), but it’s started to heat up already.

Spring is definitely upon us here in the Inland Northwest. A 90+ heat wave has caused some serious snow melt and the Spokane River crested several feet above flood stage last weekend. We went down to Riverfront Park with the Melbys’ and took photos (see the album here). Also there is a small album of macro photos I took of various spring flowers in our yard. Film is expensive, but digital is free, right?

In other news, Jakki is terribly excited about how close she is to graduation. I’ve been brewing beer for her graduation party, and we are working on a slide show to show at the pinning ceremony. She’s on the graduation committee, assuring that things will be done right :)

In response to my inquiry, I received the following email, complete with more pictures:

Hello,

The laptop is still available and I hope you are still interested. My name is Kyle Mosson and I am now in Manchester, U.K.
  This machine has been used for professional needs over the past 10 Months, it is in great condition and runs perfectly, and beyond evidence of normal use the laptop is in perfect shape. The warranty is good until June 2008 and it is fully transferable. One more thing, it works on US voltage so you do not need a converter.
  I have attached some pics with the laptop to this e-mail so you can see the condition of the laptop.
  Please get back to me and let me know if you like the laptop if you’re really interested in buying it.

Thanks,
  Kyle

I was a bit skeptical about doing business overseas, so I searched Google and came up with this blog post detailing the exact message I received. I guess it was too good to be true. I reported the scam to the abuse desk at craigslist. Craigslist is such a wonderful tool, I have bought several things locally on it, but I guess as it gets more popular there will be an increase in scams like this.

UPDATE (4/29/2008): The ad mentioned above has been taken down from the Spokane craigslist.

Notice my nifty table of my public Picasa albums over there on the left sidebar. Pretty cool huh? So do I have to publish in Movable Type every time I add a new Picasa album? No, that would be silly.

Instead, I’m using some clever DHTML javascript to build an N-column table and populate it dynamically with a JSON call out to the Picasa web API.

Here’s how I built mine:

Create a new widget template by going to the Widgets quickfilter under Design…Templates and clicking the “Create Widget template” link up top. Name it something clever, like “Photo Album”.

Set up some basic HTML elements that all Widgets have:

<h3 class="widget-header"><a href="[[link/to/your/Picasa/album]]">My Photo Album</a></h3>
<div class="widget-content [[custom css class]]" id="picasa-box">
    <p>Mouse-over a thumbnail to see album name</p>
</div>

After the
<p>
tag, insert a script to dynamically build an N-column wide HTML table to hold the album thumbnails. I got some of the code from another site, but I can’t remember which one… Anyway, here is my version:

<script type='text/javascript'>
function showalbums(json) {
   // this functions reads all album data from the json-feed and stores it in array
   var numentries = json.feed.entry.length;
   var cols=2; // THIS CHANGES THE NUMBER OF COLUMNS IN THE TABLE
   var table = document.createElement("table");
   table.setAttribute("cellspacing", "1");
   table.setAttribute("cellpadding", "1");
   // main loop gets all the entries from the feed
   for (var i = 0; i < numentries; i++) {
     // get the entry from the feed
     var entry = json.feed.entry[i];
     // get the albumtitle from the entry
     var albumTitle = entry.title.$t;
     // get the album url from the entry
     var albumUrl;
     for (var k = 0; k < entry.link.length; k++) {
       if (entry.link[k].rel == 'alternate') {
         albumUrl = entry.link[k].href;
         break;
       }
     }
     // get the album thumbnail from the entry
     var albumThumbnail = entry.media$group.media$thumbnail[0].url;
     var albumLink = document.createElement('A');
     albumLink.href = albumUrl;
     albumLink.title = albumTitle;
     var albumPic = document.createElement('IMG');
     albumPic.src = albumThumbnail;
     albumPic.alt = albumTitle;
     albumPic.height = 64;
     albumPic.width = 64;
     albumPic.border = 0;
     albumLink.appendChild(albumPic);
     // build the table
     if(i%cols==0) {
       row = table.insertRow(Math.floor(i/cols));
     }
     var cell = row.insertCell(i%cols);
     cell.setAttribute("valign", "top");
     cell.appendChild(albumLink);
   }
   var parent = document.getElementById('picasa-box');
   parent.appendChild(table);
} // end of showalbums
</script>

Change what you want.  The
cols
variable stores the number of columns in the table. You can also choose to get your thumbnails in different sizes from the Picasa API. Go here to read about all the values. If you change the thumbnail size, be sure to change
albumPic.height
and
albumPic.width
to match.

Finally, we need a call out to the Picasa API that will in turn send a callback to our
showalbums
function. Here’s what that looks like:

<script src='http://picasaweb.google.com/data/feed/base/user/[[YOUR PICASA ALBUM NAME]]?kind=album&access=public&alt=json-in-script&callback=showalbums&thumbsize=64c'></script>

Once again, the query parameters are documented by Google here

Remember to keep all this enclosed in the
</div>
tag at the bottom. Now add your shiny new widget to a widget set (I added mine to the Primary sidebar set). Publish your pages and enjoy your new webfunktual dynamicism.

PS — This seems to work fine in FireFox 2.x and Internet Exlorer 6.0. I don’t have the time or energy to test it on anything else :)

Notice the nifty Picasa gallery widget I built. It uses JSON to make an AJAX call to the Google API and then processes the results into a table which it renders in-line. I’ll try to write up how to do it later.

That should keep me off the streets for awhile… This weekend we are expecting snow, if you can believe it; so I’ll be cuddling up with a warm cuppa and my favorite web tools.
